What if you have three years left to sell your time?

What if you only had three years left to make good money from your own labour?

Not because work disappears. Because AI gets good enough that buying a person's hours stops being the cheapest way to get most computer-based work done.

Three years might be wrong. Maybe it is six. Maybe it is fifteen.

Forget the prediction for a minute. Play with the scenario.

If the date were real, what would you do differently on Monday?

Play it out

Most of us spend our working lives inside the same exchange. Give a company your time, receive a salary, pay the bills and save what is left.

That deal works because useful human attention is scarce. The output is attached to the hours.

AI starts pulling those two things apart.

An agent can research, write, design, code, plan and support customers without selling another human hour. As that work gets cheaper, the person doing it may still be useful, but the hour itself loses some of its scarcity.

If that happens quickly, a salary becomes a weaker place to hold your whole future.

What remains after the hour?

The useful question is not which job stays safe.

It is what you still own after today's work is finished.

That could be equity in a business, a useful product, software, land, energy-producing infrastructure or a share of something that keeps creating value. It could also be distribution, reputation and trusted relationships that give you access to future opportunities.

Some of those will be changed by AI too. There is no perfect shelter.

The point is to build a claim on future output instead of relying entirely on the next hour you can sell.

This does not mean quitting your job or turning your life into one large investment bet. The salary is the thing currently giving you room to make the shift.

Look at the ratio. How much of your week builds someone else's asset? How much builds something you retain a stake in?

Three years or six?

The number matters if you are making a forecast. It matters less for the underlying decision.

If AI keeps lowering the price of cognitive work, an income built entirely on human scarcity becomes more fragile over time.

You do not need the deadline to be exact before acting on that.

The rule

Do not treat three years as prophecy.

Treat it as a question: after three more years of work, what will you own that can keep producing without another hour from you?
