AI chat is single-player. WhatsApp isn't

WhatsApp is adding usernames. On its own that sounds like a small thing, a settings toggle most people will ignore. I think it is the more interesting move in chat right now, and it points at something the AI labs have not built.

The thing usernames quietly unlock

A username is identity you can hand out without a phone number. It is the first brick of a place where strangers can find each other. Once people can be found by a handle, the next steps write themselves: find a business, message it, browse, buy, all without leaving the chat.

WhatsApp is already most of the way there. It is the most used messaging app in the world, it sits between people and the businesses they talk to, and payments and catalogues have been creeping in for years. Usernames turn it into a directory. A directory is the start of a shopfront.

Now look at ChatGPT

Open ChatGPT, Claude or Grok and notice who else is in the room. Nobody.

It is a single-player experience. A silo. You and the model, alone, in a thread no one else can enter. There is no @. I cannot find another person inside the app. The two of us cannot sit in one conversation and have the model in the room with us, mediating, fetching, remembering what we both said.

The intelligence is real. The social surface is missing entirely.

Two camps holding opposite halves

So you have two camps holding opposite halves of the same product.

The labs have the model and no graph. OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI own the intelligence, and a thread you cannot share with another human.
Meta has the graph and is renting the model. It owns identity, the contacts, the businesses and the habit, and it can drop an assistant into the middle of all of it.

The question I keep turning over is which half is harder to build. A social graph with real trust and real reach takes years and tends to exist only once. A strong model is expensive, but increasingly something you can buy or match. If that is right, the side holding the graph has the shorter path to the combined thing.

What the multiplayer version looks like

Picture the conversation that does not exist yet. You and a supplier in one thread, with the assistant sitting between you. It drafts the quote, holds the spec you both agreed three messages ago, converts the currency, flags the clause that contradicts the last order. Not a bot you each talk to alone. A third participant in a shared room.

That is the move WhatsApp is one identity feature away from being able to make. It is the move ChatGPT, the way it is built today, cannot make at all.

I want to think about where a shared AI conversation would change my work, instead of the usual one-person-and-a-chatbot setup.

1. Which of these conversations currently happen one-to-one, with no AI in the room.
2. Where would it help to have an assistant sitting inside the conversation with both people, with shared memory of what was said.
3. What would it do in that room: draft, summarise, hold context, catch contradictions, handle the transaction.
4. What should it never do without one of the humans approving first.

Give me two or three concrete examples I could actually try, not a generic list.

The rule

The hard part of AI chat was never going to stay the model. It is the room the model sits in.

A silo with a brilliant assistant is still a silo. The platform that wins the next round of this probably will not be the one with the smartest model. It will be the one that already has the people, and quietly learns to put the model in the room between them.
